Bangkok Day 1: Thai Snake Thriller

Anthony loves all things creepy-crawly and is a huge fan of Okto’s Animal Night series. One episode featured dangerous snakes and mentioned a snake farm in Thailand, so when he heard we were going there, his one request was to visit the farm. Luckily it turned up on Google because our friend who’s been living in Bangkok didn’t even know it was just across the road from where she lives.  Guess snakes don’t usually make it to most people’s “must see” list!

The Queen Saowapha Memorial Institute has quite a lot of offer for those interested in snakes. As it was set up to do research on and produce anti-venom serum for snake-bite victims, one of the highlights is a daily venom-milking demonstration (10:30am). They also have a snake-handling show at 2 pm but we couldn’t make it back as we already had plans for the afternoon. Guess we’ll just have to save it for the next trip!

The farm has many venomous snakes on display including cobras, kraits, pit vipers and pythons, as well as an exhibition on toxicology. The kids had a wonderful time looking at these up-close. All in, it was an engaging and educational experience, well worth spending an hour or two!
