Concentrate!

IMG02999-20110307-1712

So I’ve been trying to get Anthony who’s in K1 into some regular routine of writing daily (I hope my experience with this 4yo isn’t anything too different from most other parents with 4yos!). Anyway, there are good days when he cooperates with me willingly and then there are those ‘other days’ when the only things that seem to work are threats and more threats…

I had one of the best days yesterday – at least from a laugh-o-meter perspective…

Me: (The usual prelude to “time to sit down now”) Anthony, you’re a big boy now. All big boys must learn to read… Must practice writing so you can write neatly…

Anthony: OK, Mommy… (sits down, chooses his favourite coloured pencil, starts putting pen to paper, erases something, writes/scrawls/scribble, occasionally asks for something to eat/drink, writes/scribbles/erases some more, stands up & walk arounds, ... repeat…)

When he was finally done, he brought his book to show me.

Me: This is good. Well some good, some you need to try and do more neatly?

Anthony: OK, Mommy. You know I *always* *really* try (SIGH)… I’m really very concentrated you know.

Concentrated. Wow. Nevermind that he didn’t use the work quite correctly, the thing is I didn’t even know he had an inkling what “concentrate” means. He must’ve been listening in and concentrating quietly during my conversations about focus & concentration with his big sister.

Alright, very concentrated accepted. You are learning lots at your own pace. Keep at it, you’ll master lots soon enough. Especially if you concentrate. Mommy loves every little concentrated bit of you!

Skate with me, my friend!

IMG_8639

"Don't walk in front of me; I might not follow. Don't walk behind me; I might not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend."  ---Albert Camus

Whilst we were staycationing at Marina Bay Sands Hotel earlier this week, Audrey and her best friend Rachel decided they wanted to try out skating. “It’s the same as rollerblading. We want to try it!” they insisted. I was frankly quite surprised that they were so eager… and fearless!

IMG_8616

Before they could get started though, we had to go on a little scavenger hunt… for socks (yes, they’re mandatory). The ones sold at the rink were too big for Audrey’s dainty feet. Fortunately,  we didn’t have to go far. We managed to find them just upstairs at the Poney shop. We got the skates, which the girls quickly donned and off they went, onto the rink!

IMG_8572

They started rather tentatively, holding on to the side rails and taking small steps. Balance came quite easily to them but they liked the security of having the rails well within reach. They skated maybe three rounds around the rink, keeping close to the side.

IMG_8577IMG_8611

It wasn’t long before they ventured into the centre. They made it look all quite easy really even though they weren’t exactly whizzing around the rink. A few stumbles here and there, but they were just fine.

IMG_8652IMG_8651

They were moving, gliding around carefully but confidently. They even managed to fool around a little and had a very animated discussion and conversation balancing on their skates in the middle of the rink. We were too far away to know what they were chatting about, but they looked like they were having fun… and that’s all that mattered really!

Well done, you two – we’re so proud of you. We’ll be back again soon!

School Holiday Special: Marina Bay Sands!

So, we were deciding whether to go somewhere during the 1-week term break in March… but when you really only have a few days and don’t want to end up packing and unpacking and transferring from cabs to airplanes with kids in tow, a staycation seemed quite ideal.

Good thing too that we stayed close to home this time because I got hit by a really bad bout of viral conjunctivitis on Saturday that left me spending a few hours at Singapore General Hospital’s Accident & Emergency unit. We wouldn’t have made it past the airport customs with my red swollen eyes!

So this past weekend, we managed a quick getaway with some friends for a relaxing three-day-two-night stay at Marina Bay Sands. We got one room with the sea view and another with the bay view. The sea view is peppered with ongoing construction – it should be much nicer in a few months time.

IMG_8421IMG_8853Our rooms on the 22nd floor were spacious with standard amenities.  In-room Cable TV (almost permanently locked to Cartoon Network!)…

Free WiFi high-speed internet (for surfing/iPhone-ing to our hearts’ content!)… Mini bar with complimentary  TWG tea & Robert Timms coffee…

..And then of course the luxurious double beds - perfect for lazing around on…and for the boys to make soldier trenches – they stacked pillows and climbed in and out for over an hour, amazing to watch..

And finally, the BATH TUB.. no hotel stay would be complete without it! The kids took at least two long baths a day… at one point, three of them were playing in the bathtub together!

Outside, the highlight of MBS is its Infinity Pool and Sky Park on the 57th floor. It was quite simply breath-taking. Tall waving palms, inviting white poolside deck chairs, clear blue skies painted with picture-perfect white clouds, shimmering infinity pool with the city skyline stretching out as its backdrop.. We were impressed and we fell into step with the rhythm of relaxation in the heart of the city.

IMG_8555IMG_8444IMG_8471IMG_8475IMG_8538IMG_8434IMG_8533

The swimming pool links to the Sky Park where you can take in the full expanse that is Singapore (I left my my camera in the room when I went on my walk and was too lazy to head back to get it, so no landscape pictures – OOPS!)…

IN AND AROUND MARINA BAY SANDS

We walked around to check out what else MBS has to offer. Besides the upmarket shopping areas, the Wonder Full light and water spectacular – a 13-minute show at the Event Plaza at the waterfront - was enjoyable and left the kids in awe. It’s entertainment a la Dubai and Las Vegas, combining giant water screens, lasers, LEDs and video projectors to create stunning visual effects, choreographed to a inspiring locally-composed original score and Sam Cooke’s ‘What a Wonderful World’… It was a memorable end to our stay!

IMG_8836

For most part we spent our time in the hotel rooms, including eating in! We had Rasapura’s local delights, Korean Kraze Burgers, Cold Stone Creamery and takeaways from Marina Square’s Carl’s Junior, Lau Pa Sat…

IMG_8709IMG_8669IMG_8825IMG_8828IMG_8819IMG_8716IMG_8717IMG_8719IMG_8586

Marina Bay Sands is a huge swanky venue – targeting business travellers, conventions, luxury shopping and dining. It isn’t quite a child/family friendly venue. The pool - whilst impressive - allowed only arm floats which isn’t ideal when you have younger kids; and as the kids pointed out, even the kid’s pool “doesn’t have a slide or playground”! The skating rink does present something different and was good fun for the 7-year-old girls – our boys unfortunately are under the age/height limit so they had to sit it out. We didn’t go to the ArtScience Musuem this trip – preferring to maximise the hotel stay.. save something for another outing!

And food, well, the options within MBS are largely between overpriced foodcourt fare and expensive celebrity restaurants. The “in-betweens” are quite uninspiring. Good thing MBS is located close to Marina Square / Suntec City / Lau Pa Sat and we are blessed with wonderful hubby/daddy who can’t do without a daily dose of leg-stretching, so we were brought some good (and decently-priced!) takeaway meals to supplement the MBS fare!

All in, it was a good break, stress-free and relaxing – we left very nicely re-charged! Happy holidays!

Help! There’s a Zombie on my bed !!!

Last night, we heard strange Chomp-Chomp-Chomping noises and squeals of laughter coming from the bedroom. We looked in only to find this scene… right out of Plants vs Zombies

Anthony had made a funny discovery: His plastic toy pail fit perfectly on his head and this would turn him into one of the creepy Buckethead Zombies from the game (see the resemblance to the ‘real’ thing on the right!?!). He even took pains to ensure that the pail-handle fell in front of his face!

Audrey very gamely grabbed a bunch of flowers and became the sunflower that the Zombie would chomp up greedily!!

Guess that’s probably a much better ending than this….
