We took a cab from Wat Pho to Chinatown where we spent a few hours walking around. Lunch provided the much-needed recharge - we headed to air-conditioned Nam Sing, at the recommendation of old friend & ex-colleague Siriporn. Apparently it’s one of the oldest insitutions along Yaowarat and popular amongst Singaporeans. For about SG$80, we had 2 claypots of sharks fin, as well as steamed fish, scallops with brocolli, and fried tofu – a pretty good deal. Their free-flow homemade “bird’s nest” drink was most refreshing for the hot day!
Bellies filled, we were ready to tackle the local market at Sam Paeng. The street alleys are narrow and densely packed on both sides with stores selling just about anything: toys, party favours, shoes, clothing, accessories, handbags, housewares. It was jam-packed and chaotic – crowded would be an understatement! It wasn’t just people but the constant push of scooters, bikes and carts piled high with goods – we had to move aside quickly to let them pass to prevent any toe accidents!
We had ample opportunity to gawk at unusual local foods at the market. Anthony must’ve looked very hungry because he was constantly offered food by the shop vendors. He very gamely tried everything, cashew nuts, dried fruit and even ‘hae-bee’ (little savoury dried prawns), hahaha!
But we drew the line at these !
